Cleanse your body of judgment, expectation, and criticism.
What judgments do you place upon your body? I should be thinner. My stomach should be flatter. I shouldn't get so many headaches. Why don't I look like that woman on TV? That's what I'm supposed to be like.
What expectations do you place upon your body? I should be in better shape. I shouldn't ache so much when I wake up in the morning. Is that a gray hair? I cannot show any signs of aging. That's not allowed. I should be able to look and act just like I did when I was 18. Come on now!
What criticisms do you place upon your body? Where did those wrinkles come from? And that cellulite? I didn't used to have that. What is wrong with me? Why am I so tired all the time? I should have more energy. I shouldn't need a nap.
Can you imagine saying those things to a dear friend? No? That's probably because if you did, you would no longer have such a dear friend. And yet we place these judgments on our own bodies every day.
Our friend would likely have, a) yelled at us or b) run away. Or even worse, c) listened to us and then begun to think there was something wrong with her.
So how do you think your body reacts when it hears these words?
The Body Love Cleanse is for every woman who feels disconnected from her body, who feels like her body is working against her or just plain defying her.

Are you thinking, "Yes, of course I want to love my body, but I've never been able to before. Why will it be different now?" Before you go any further, I want you to try an exercise that I use whenever I find myself in conflict, saying I want one thing, but feeling or doing another.
Are you ready to start loving your body? Try this exercise to find out if you're ready:
Step 1: On a piece of paper, write down all the possible benefits of loving your body just as it is right now. Examples might be: If I love my body as it is now, I'll feel more confident during sex. I'll buy clothes that actually fit me rather than trying to squeeze into pants that are too small. I'll stop trying to deny how tired I am and actually allow myself to take naps when I need to.
Step 2: Now write down all the possible downsides of loving your body just as it is right now. Examples might be: If I love my body as it is now, I might go off my diet and eat crap. I'll stop going to the gym because I won't have something to aspire to. I'll have to accept that I need to make some changes in my life so that I won't be so tired - and I'm not ready to do that.
Step 3: Write down all the possible benefits of NOT loving your body as it is now. Examples might be: If I don't love my body as it is now, I'll keep trying to fit into my too-small clothes and won't have to spend money on new clothes. I won't have to face any of the emotions I might have about my body if I allowed myself to love it. I won't have to do anything differently than how I've been doing it for years.
Step 4: Write down all the possible downsides of NOT loving your body as it is now. Examples might be: If I don't love my body as it is now, I'll keep trying fad diet after fad diet, even though I know they're not good for my health. I'll continue feeling anger at my body for not being what I want it to be, rather than learning to accept what it actually is.
Step 5: Now I want you to imagine completely separating the part of you that wants to love your body from the part of you that is not ready to love your body. Imagine putting one part into your right hand and one part into your left hand.
Which part is in your left hand?
Beginning with your left hand, close your eyes and imagine allowing that part of you to tell you whatever it's feeling. If you're having trouble and not hearing anything, imagine telling that part of you that you're listening and ready to honor and respect whatever it tells you. Then just listen to whatever comes up.
When that side is done talking, do the same thing with the other part of you.
Continue going back and forth in your mind, allowing the two sides to have a conversation until both sides have reached a conclusion that they can both agree to. Write down the final conclusion.
Now the question is, are you ready to take the next steps toward loving your body?
